Stay cool in the hot Summer of 2011

Pickup broomball will be held throughout the summer on Tuesday nights from 8 to 9:20 at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, NC.

Pickup broomball is the best way for new players to get introduced to the sport, and is also a great venue for current players to hone their skills, or pickup skills in general!!

For just $10 per session, you can escape the summer heat, participate in a great excercise activity, and become a better broomballer.

News 11/16/10

(in the voice of an arena announcer) "There is only one week of broomball remaining"

Week 9 is done, and once again it will come down to the final week, and then maybe ridiculous statistics, to determine the seeding for this season's playoffs.

Nationwide entered this week in 5th place, and faced off against 1st place HD Imports, formerly HonDoc.  Without many of their players, it looked like Nationwide should have an easy go for the victory.  And after the first few minutes, with two goals on the boards by Brandon Brown (both assisted by Dane Rossmann), it looked like they would roll to victory.  But if you were to ever think there would ever be a game that Steve Hoeflin would ever give up, think again, and 2-0 became 2-1 in a hurry, with a Carter Jensen pass to Steve Hoeflin to get HD on the boards.  3-1 Nationwide on a Dane Rossmann goal (if your are counting, his 3rd point of the night) and a comfortable lead again.  3-2 with Tyler Houle lighting the lamp, again assisted by Carter Jensen.  Dane Rossmann (4th point of the night!!) assisted Brandon Brown (now a hat trick for him), and Brandon scored unassisted shortly following...and short-handed...for his 4th goal of the night to give Nationwide a 5-2 lead.  Salt on the wound was provided by rookie players Allan Azali and Sara Brown, as Sara's FIRST CAREER CAROLINA BROOMBALL GOAL made the game 7-2.  And it's a good thing for Nationwide that she did, because Steve Hoeflin tallied his second of the night, assisted by Tyler Houle, then scored his 3rd of the night unassisted, and Carter Jensen earned his 3rd point of the game with a last second assist to Angie Synan who scored a 2 point goal to bring HD Imports back to a one goal game.  The buzzer sounded just after the ball crossed the line, and the closest scoring "blowout" of the season was in the books.

The last time the LumbarJacks met the Ice Pirates, the 'Jacks ran them through with a 6-1 flogging.  On Sunday, the Pirates sought revenge.  Nick Beiring tallied first for the Pirates on a goal assisted by linemate Brett Mathew.  Playing in her second game of the night, Angie Synan scored, assisted by Pamel Jones, to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead.  With George Beaver thinking about the definition of "Hooking", Brett Mathew showed extreme patience and precision as he worked the ball low, and set up Angie Synan for her 3rd and 4th points of the game.  Brett Mathew, already with 2 assists on the night, tallied a goal of his own, assisted by Pamel Jones, giving the Pirates a 6-0 lead.  Know who else in the league doesn't give up?  The LumbarJacks.  And although the clock would say "all hope is gone" Philip Compton, assisted by Brian McLaughlin, broke the shutout, and but the Lumbarjacks on the boards.  Joe Perkins would follow suit moments later, and would take a Philip Compton pass and send it top shelf for a beauty of a goal.  First Matchup: 6-1 LumbarJacks.  2nd matchup 6-2 Pirates.  Who still thinks this league isn't balanced??

And if there ever could be an argument that a 1-8-0 team is still balanced, that argument would be Team Orange.  With only one loss by a margin of more than 3 goals, Team Orange has dropped their last 3 games (Sunday included) by only one goal.  If ever there was a chance a 6th seed could find their way deep into the playoffs, this is the chance.  Willie Dearing started the game with two goals, first assisted by Lindsay Roberston, the second by Kevin Hummel.  Matt Schmidt tallied one, assisted by Jason Novak, to cut the lead in half, and Jon Wybo evened it up, assisted by Matt Schmidt to knot the game at 2-2.  Rookie Preston Reep would earn the game winner on Sunday, taking a Lindsay Roberston pass and lighting the lamp, to seal the victory for the Extreme Ice Center.  A very close, competitive and LOUD game it was as these two teams fought till the last seconds of the game!  A great effort for sure.

I find it amazing that the top two teams both have equal GF and GA.....and the team with the best GF/GA differential is in 3rd place!

Next week's matchups look like this:

11/21/2010

4:30 PM

Team Orange

Nationwide

5:15 PM

HD Imports

Dr. Pai's LumbarJacks

6:00 PM

Ice Pirates

Extreme Ice Center

Team Orange is already locked in for 6th place, but could also lock Nationwide into 5th if Orange wins.  If Nationwide wins, they could move up in standings, depending upon what the LumbarJacks do, and what the Ice Pirates do.  If both lose, Nationwide could earn the 3rd seed.

HD Imports seal a 1st place seed with a win and an XIC loss, a second place seed with a win and an XIC win, and an enormous headache with a loss and a Pirates' win, as 3 teams will end the season with 12 points.

If the Pirates win, and the LumbarJacks win, The Pirates would actually end up as the 1st Seed based on wins, the 'Jacks and Extreme Ice would be tied with points, and we'd have to find the rule book for the tie breaker, and HonDoc would fall to 4th with an Orange win, and tied with Nationwide for points, if Nationwide wins, and we'd have to re-read the rule book for ruling on the tie breaker there, too!

So how are ties broken you ask??  Well even if you didn't, here's the rule
Tie Breaking System
If a tie still exists in the standings after having two points for a win and one point for a tie, the following procedures shall be taken to break the tie.  If more than one team is tied, the procedure will revert back to tie breaker 1 for the remaining teams after the first team has been declared the winner of the tie breaker.
1:  The team with the best record based on 2 points for a win and 1 point for a tie considering games between the teams involved in the tie breaking, only
2:  The team with the greater goal differential (plus/minus) considering the teams involved in the tie breaking, only
3:  The team with the greater goal differential considering all teams in the division.
4:  The team with the most goals scored considering the teams involved in the tie breaker, only
5:  The team with the most goals scored considering all teams in the division
6:  the team with the fewest goals sallowed considering the teams involved in the tie breaker only
7:  The team with  the fewest goals allowed considering all teams in the division
8:  And if that still doesn't do it, there will be a 5 minute period with regular rules and then a 5 minute overtime period if needed followed by sudden death overtime period if still needed.

And just for good measure, that tie breaker game will be played on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  Exact time to be determined on Sunday, should we find out that game is necessary.

Hope you were paying attention in Statistics class, these are the times when we say - Oh yeah, I guess that does come in handy!!  :)

Have a great week, and will see you on Sunday!

The design is finalized and we are ready for production!!  Check out the jpgs attached for the design and colors!!

This design is classic Carolina Broomball, with the logo on the back, and "Carolina Broomball" on the chest.  What a classy look, and what a conversation piece!

I will have an order form with me on Sunday, and I'll take email orders starting right now!!  I'll place the order on Monday, and we should have them in about a week!!

To order via e-mail, all I need is your name, shirt size and quantity.  T-shirts are $15 each.  Make sure you spread the word to your spouse, children and extended family members....these shirts will make perfect holiday presents!!
Back_of_Shirt.jpg

Front_of_shirt.jpg

And now you can also dress up your vehicle!!  For the first time, Carolina Broomball is offering window stickers!  Put them on your car, your truck, your window at work, your spouse's car, your parents' car....you can put them anywhere! These window clings will stick to the inside of the window, thereby avoiding excess weather damage. You see stickers for Carolina beaches, for schools, and for soccer clubs...now you can top them all with your very own www.carolinabroomball.com window cling. $6 each, 2 for $10, or $5 each with the purchase of a T-shirt!!  To reduce the size of this email, the window cling image will be posted on the website.  Pre-orders are not necessary for the stickers...they will be here by 10/24!!!

I am very excited about these, and hope you like them, too!!  As always, I am interested in your thoughts, suggestions, and ideas.  For some reason, the complaint line is still having problems, and is not operational at this time.

______________________________________________

A difficult write-up for sure....so maybe I'll start this week with the philosophical paragraph, and end with the game writeups.

It was evident on Sunday night that, as a league, we need to remember this is a recreational league.  The purpose of the league is to have fun.  You may remember me saying, "Have fun, but play so that others have fun, too."  Or my frequently referred to code:  "League, team, player".  The bottom line, is we all take a responsibility in making broomball an enjoyable activity for everyone else.  That philosophy should be evident on and off the ice.  It should mean that slashing and tripping and roughing and interference (etc) penalties should be very rare, because you'd rather allow someone to make a play, than to cause an injury.  It means if to get to the ball you'll end up knocking someone over, then don't get to the ball.  It also means referees will make bad calls (think of Armando Galarraga and his almost perfect game) and as humans and amateurs they will continue to miss some calls.  Voicing your opinion is also part of the game, and when done appropriately, can actually make for improvements in the way the league is run, and the way we play broomball.

And don't think I don't know that I've been guilty as charged in the past for over-reacting to on-ice events, and showing my ass (figuratively thankfully, not literally) once or twice (ok three times, that I can remember).  And don't think I don't know that there will be times in the future when an incident will provoke a spirited reaction.  But as an individual, as a team, and as a league, we continue to have responsibility to make sure tempers are kept in check, and that each and every Sunday we can all head home happy to have been there, and happy to come back the next week.

Our first game was quite interesting, as the Pirates showed up with even less players than the week before.  With just six players suited up, they faced off against a full squad (at least a full bench) from the Extreme Ice Center.  Holding their own in the first period, Willie Dearing was able to beat EBUG Pamel Jones on a fast break to give XIC a one goal lead.  Never giving up the ship, the Pirates fought hard, but failed to capitalize on any of their few good scoring chances.  Kevin D. played well in goal, and with the help of the red metal beams, held off everything the Pirates could muster.  The Pirates suffered their second defeat in a row, and Extreme Ice Center continued with their winning ways, going 3-0-1 over their past 4 games.

In the second game, EBUG Greg Krypel looked to improve his team's record as most of his team (except their starting Goalie) was suited up and ready to go.  Acting as the last line of defense, Greg relied on his teammates to light the lamp on the other side of the ice.  George Prince added his name to the scoring sheet with his first goal of the season (and added an assist later in the game) to give Nationwide a 1-0 advantage.  Assisted by Andrew Stein on the first goal, the two switched roles, as George assisted Andrew for the 2-0 lead.  Brandon Brown continued his scoring streak with adding an unassited goal and tallied the final point of the game, as Nationwide defeated Team Orange 3-0.

Undefeated LumbarJacks faced off against struggling HD Imports formerly named HonDoc to look to stay on top of the Carolina Broomball Standings.  But HD Imports had other plans, and even though Scott Hutula's league leading 7th goal of the season started the game off with scoring, Zach Houle, evened it up with a college try goal (cuz he is IN college), assisted by Zan Henry.  I have to check our record books to see how many times ZH assisted a ZH goal. (Yeah, it's the wierd shit like that interests me).  Joe Perkins regained the lead for the 'Jacks scoring his 3rd goal of the season.  Carter Jensen evened it up in the 2nd half, assisted by Steve Hoeflin, and the score remained deadlocked until very late in the game when Tyler Houle caught the inside of the crossbar and tallied his 3rd goal of the season, and the game-winner for HD Imports.

The second half of the season starts on Sunday Night with the following matchups:

10/17/2010

4:30 PM

Ice Pirates

Team Orange

5:15 PM

HD Imports

Extreme Ice Center

6:00 PM

9/20/10:

Team Orange (to be named or sponsored hopefully very soon) debuted their new goalie this evening, and fought a tough game against Mark Rizzo and the LumbarJacks.  We welcomed Ed Dalrymple to the league, and watched in awe as he transitioned extremely well from that other game on ice (the one with skates and pucks) to broomball.  Putting up a great effort, Team Orange was ultimately defeated by the LumbarJacks.  Joe Perkins scored his first goal of the season - and his first with his new team, assisted by Janet Sweet, and had support from team Captain, Scott Hutula, whose goal is his 4th of the season, and was assisted by newcomer Kelsi Compton!  Welcome to Carolina Broomball Ed and Kelsi - we are very glad to have both of you in the league!

In the second game, the Ice Pirates pillaged HD Imports, formerly known as HonDoc in a 7-2 victory.   Heather Mathew started the scoring for the game with a two point tally picking up a short pass right on top of the crease from Mondo Normile.  Nick Beiring tallied his first of the night, second of the season, with a homerun swing that was ruled (and was) just under the high-stick line.  Mondo Normile took a pass from Nick Beiring, beat the defense (okay, I was cherry picking a little bit), closed his eyes, and did his best Richard Stanley hand-pass impersonation for his first goal of the season.  Brett Mathew joined in tallying two goals of his own, one assisted by Nick Beiring, the other by prodigal son Pamel Jones.  Nick Beiring tallied one more for the Pirates before the final buzzer sounded.  For HonDoc, Neil Frye took full advantage of a loose ball a few feet from the top of the crease, and Steve Hoeflin added his 4th of the season to give their team their two points of the game.  Tyler Houle played in his first game of this season, and scored the assist on Neal's lamplighter.

Game three was an Extreme Ice/Nationwide showdown between two 0-1 teams.  Scoring phenomenon Brian Q got into the groove early, and was assisted on his goal by newcomer Kevin Hummel.  Dustin Robertson gave his team a 2-0 lead with a laser from the defensive post, that hit the back of the net after going through (or off) the Nationwide defense.  Brian Q would add one more for the night, and rookie Preston Reep showed some scrappy determination to tally his first career Carolina Broomball goal.  Congrats Preston!!  Greg Krypel would not give up, and made his pass from Jason Kniesc count to break the looming Drucker shutout.  "Eric played a really good game.  We were lucky to get some of those goals on him, and there were others that we thought would have been goals, but Eric kept them out", said an Extreme Ice player who requested his identity to be kept anonymous (or the writer simply forgot who said it).

Please check www.carolinabroomball.com in the next day or two for a standings and statistics update!!

I look forward to seeing everyone again next Sunday as the Carolina Broomball season continues with the following matchups:

9/14/10

What is it about Jodi Helmer and Extreme Ice Center??  In the past two games, Jodi has posted 3 goals (2 game winners) and has played her best broomball in her career.  Now keep in mind, to, that Jodi has scored only 4 goals in her career.  To say this gal is on fire is an understatement!

So the season for Extreme Ice Center started as it began.  A tough defeat at the hands of HonDoc.  To start the scoring, veteran (and yes, when I say veteran, I mean old) player, Steve Hoeflin tallied the first goal of the season.  Jodi followed with some crazy extra effort spin move that sent a loose ball at the goal crease into the back of the net (or maybe just over the line....I was far away, but nonetheless, the ball crossed the line!).  Steve Hoeflin finished the night with two more goals (both assisted by Tommy Quinn) for the first Hat Trick of the season as well.  Steve also assisted on Jodi's goal, so this "old dog" had plenty of tricks left, with tallying a total of 4 points on the night.  Xan Henry teamed up with Steve on the first goal of the game.

In addition to showing he is very loud, Brian Q also showed that he doesn't give up, and broke Mike Hall's shutout with an extra-effort goal late in the game.  Carolina Broomball rookie Preston Reep scored the Assist on Q's goal.

The LumbarJacks must have been watching the first game closely, as they came out and tallied the first four goals of the game, just like HonDoc did.  And Scott Hutula tallied the Second Hat Trick of the season, assisted by 3 different players, Trevor Baker, Geoff Person, and Janet Sweet.  Carolina Broomball rookies Philip Compton of the LumbarJacks added the final goal for the 'Jacks, assisted by Geoff Person, and rooking Brandon Brown, assisted by Dane Rossman, scored his first CB goal to break Mark Rizzo's shutout!!  Congratulations to Philip and Brandon, and welcome to the league!!

The Team That Wears Orange debuted on Sunday against the Ice Pirates.  In a very close, well matched game, the Ice Pirates managed to pull off the victory, as Mondo Normile assisted both Nick Beiring and Angie Synan for their goals of the game, and Myles Rahalewicz held on to post the first shutout of the season.  Missing a key play maker in Andrew Stein, and the offensive (not body odor, scoring ability) defensemen of George Prince, Team Orange looks to have quite a bit of potential this season.  With a pair of players who are known to put the rock in the back of the net in Doug Boik and Matt Schmidt, and with Deb Douglas as the team's leading lady, this team is ready to gel and to play some real good broomball!!

Next week's matchups include:
Team Orange vs LumbarJacks at 4:30 pm
HonDoc vs Ice Pirates at 5:15 pm
Extreme Ice Center vs Nationwide (Team Patterson) at 6:00 pm

If you have any questions, if I have forgotten any information (or anybody) PLEASE kindly let me know.

Management recognizes there have been mistakes and plenty of opportunities for improvement at the start of this season, but the broomball was good on Sunday, and leads me to believe we are in store for another fantastic broomball season!!

Okay, well here is the first part of the schedule!  We have a date in October in question, and after that is figured out, the rest of the schedule will be announced.  We will be crunched for completing the season before the Christmas Holidays.  Right now it looks like 12/19/2010 will be the Championship Game....I'll run our options by the captains and we'll figure out what's best.  We may have to play on Halloween, and we tried to play on Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend last year, and that did not work out all too well, so we are not scheduling league games on that Sunday.  We may be able to move our games up on 10/31, and hopefully that will alleviate any conflicts with Trick or Treating!

Here's the schedule for the first 4 weeks:

Sunday, September 12
4:30 pm - HonDoc vs Extreme Ice Center (Yes, as always, the rematch from last season's Championship Game!)
5:15 pm - LumbarJacks vs Team Patterson
6:00 pm - Ice Pirates vs Team Harvey

Sunday, September 19
4:30 pm - LumbarJacks vs Team Harvey
5:15 pm - Ice Pirates vs HonDoc
6:00 pm - Team Patterson vs Extreme Ice Center

Sunday, September 26 - No Broomball Games

Sunday, October 3
4:30 pm - Team Patterson vs Ice Pirates
5:15 pm - Extreme Ice Center vs LumbarJacks
6:00 pm - Team Harvey vs HonDoc

Sunday, October 10
4:30 pm - Extreme Ice Center vs Team Harvey
5:15 pm - Team Patterson vs HonDoc
6:00 pm - LumbarJacks vs Ice Pirates

That's what we've got for now....

Team Rosters
I don't think we've had any season in our history with a greater loss of players from one season to the next.  Two knee surgeries, relocations, a tough economy, and the list goes on....We certainly will miss those who have moved away, wish a speedy recovery to those who are recovering, and we hope to see the quick return of those who are unable to participate this season!
Fortunately though, we welcome a bunch of new faces to the league!  Most teams will have rosters of 10.  There already are discussions about reconsidering the female sub rule, as we have a few teams with only one female player assigned.

For your review, the rosters are as follows:

12/1/09

The first round of playoffs have occured, and two teams are now resting for next season.

In the first game, the 3rd Seed Nationwide fell to 6th Seed LumbarJacks, as the 'Jacks scored 7 points.  "Where did that come from" the rest of the league wondered, as the 'Jacks scored a total of 14 points in their 10 regular season games!!  Although Nationwide struggled to establish an offensive attack, it was nice to see Mike Bare return to the game and set up teammate Richard Stanley for both Nationwide goals.  For the Team In Black, 6 different players scored points, with both Lisa Thornton and Janet Sweet each tallying a goal; Scott Hutula had two goals and an assist, and Brian McLaughlin had a goal and an assist.  Nice showing LumbarJacks....one more win and you'll be defending your Championship Title for the 3rd consecutive year!!

In the second game, HonDoc came alive on the scoring front, and posted 8 goals as Steve Hoeflin and crew downed Lanny's 8-3.  Lanny's fought hard, but couldn't answer the attack in black, as Steve Hoeflin scored 3 goals, Tommy Quinn added one, Zach Houle tallied a pair, brother Tyler added one, and Carter Jensen muscled the game winner off the goalie's arm.  Congratulations to Jodi Helmer of Team HonDoc for scoring her first Carolina Broomball point, assisting Zach Houle on his second goal of the game!!  For Lanny's, Jon Wybo, Matt Schmidt and Dane Rossman each scored a goal, and Jason Kniesc had the one recorded assist.

The next round of the playoffs occurs on this Sunday, December 6th:
At 4:45, Extreme Ice Center will take on the LumbarJacks.
At 5:45, The Ice Pirates will take on HonDoc.

Look for an update soon to confirm pick-up broomball from 3:45 to 4:45 pm.

The Championship Game will be held on December 13th.

Information Regarding Next Season:
I know, playoffs may not be the ideal time to be thinking about next season, but we have our schedule set, and I need to know if there will be any roster changes.  I'm making the assumption that teams will not be changing, so if that is incorrect, I need to know as soon as possible.

So, if you are on a team and you want to play on a different team, please let me know.  It would help if you've already communicated that to the affected teams, but I know sometimes help is needed in roster changes, so please contact me if that is the case.

We are scheduled to have two full pickup sessions on 1/3/2010, and 1/10/2010, and we plan to start the new season on 1/17/2010.  We will be off on 1/31, 2/7, and 4/4.  If we expand to a 7th or 8th team (yes, once again there is the potential of growing the league), we'll play deep into May.  Otherwise the Championship game is scheduled for May 2, 2010.

Brett Mathew is spearheading our "Search for bar sponsors" effort and will be asking anyone who is interested in helping in this endeavor to provide him with your cell phone number.  He will be identifying potential sponsors, and will be notifying the group of where he will be heading.  Anyone interested in meeting and drinking (on your own dime mind you) in the name of broomball will be highly encouraged to do so.  Hopefully we can find a proprietor or two to take to the idea of more business, and will sponsor a team.  If you have any suggestions on where to go, please let Brett know.

See you on the ICE!

The regular season is now in the books, and this is how it happened:

In the early game, both the Ice Pirates and Lanny's entered the game on multi-game winning streaks.  A Lanny's win would have clinched 3rd place for them in the playoff seeding.  In the first half, Mondo Normile, assisted by Joe Perkins, would tally his 8th goal of the season, and give the Pirates the 1 goal lead.  Co-veteran Brett Mathew would tally two goals of his own, assisted by his wife Heather on one, and by Mondo on the other.   Lanny's put the pressure on all game, but substitute net minder, Mike Hall, backstopped for the White and Black and logged the shutout.

It was a close game between LumbarJacks and Nationwide, and it would not be settled until late in the second period.  Nathan Thornton tallied first to give the 'Jacks an early lead, but Richard Stanley would even the score taking a perfectly placed pass by teammate Robin Merry, fought off two defenders, and lit the lamp behind Mark Rizzo.  Mike Hoeflin, after clearing waivers and Visa clearance, helped out his old team, to give the 'Jacks the lead just before the end of the half.  In the second half, Gary Dalena got the helper on a Dave Williamson goal, and late in the period Richard Stanley set up Doug Boik on a sweet behind-the-goal play that would give Nationwide the 3-2 victory.

In the last game of the regular season, HonDoc faced off against Extreme Ice Center.  HonDoc's engine seemed to be stalled all night long.  Their transmission just couldn't get into high gear.  It was like the team timing belt was broken.  Enough automobile references??  Anyhow, Extreme Ice put a hurting on HonDoc, with a 7-2 victory.  Greg Krypel must have drank some magic juice before the game as he logged 5 points - 3 goals and 2 assists to help his team to victory.  Andrew Stein tallied two goals and an assist.  Brian Q sealed the regular season scoring title with 2 goals and an assist.  Marty Sardinia assisted on one of Greg's goals, and Lindsey Robertson added two points to her amazing season, with two assists on the evening.

And so the playoff matchups are as follows:

Extreme Ice Center - 1st Place.  Bye week this week.
Ice Pirates - 2nd Place.  Bye week this week.
Nationwide - 3rd Place.  Early game this weekend (11/29/2009)
Lanny's - 4th Place.  Late game this weekend (11/29/2009)
HonDoc - 5th Place.  Late game this weekend (11/29/2009)
LumbarJacks - 6th Place.  Early game this weekend (11/29/2009)

I do hope to host a pickup session before the playoff games.  If you have anyone that may be interested in playing the coolest sport on ice, please encourage them to come out on Sunday to play.  There may be no better way to lose some of the extra pounds from feasting on Turkey and stuffing on Thursday that to play some broomball.  Okay, I just thought of one ;)

Exact times for this weekend's game still to be announced.  If you are traveling this weekend for Thanksgiving, travel home early on Sunday!!

Worthless things to note:
The largest margin of victory this season was 8 points.  Recorded twice by Extreme Ice Center.
The highest scoring game was this past week, a 9 point game; 7-2 Extreme Ice Victory over HonDoc.
There were 7 tie games this season.  I'm double-checking, but I'm quite sure that's a CB record.
The most points scored (cumulative of all 3 games) was 17.  Week 10.
The least points scored in a night (cumulative of all 3 games) was 9.  Week 8.
There were 7 shutouts this season.  Extreme Ice posted 4.  Ice Pirates posted 2.  Lanny's posted 1.

Congratulations to Brian Quedenfeld of Extreme Ice for earning the scoring title for the season with 21 points (18g, 3a).  Mondo Normile was runner up with 13 (8g, 5a).  Lindsay Robertson led the charge for the ladies with 12 points on the season (3g, 6a) and finished 3rd overall!  Honorable mention to the biggest 'helpers' of the season:  Dustin Robertson had 8 assists, leading the league in that category.  Lindsay, Stephan Angers, and Brett Mathew each tallied 6 helpers on the season.

Looking forward to a fun, recreational playoff season, starting THIS SUNDAY, November 29th!!

And the jockeying for playoff positioning continues.  Our first game on Sunday showcased last place HonDoc taking on Nationwide, who was in a 3 place tie for 3rd.  Early in the game, Tina Quinn scored her first goal of the season to give HonDoc a 2-0 early lead.  Congratulations Tina on your first Carolina Broomball goal!!  Richard Stanley tallied his 4th goal of the season to cut the lead in half, but Steve Hoeflin took over from there, and scored a natural hat trick, to seal the victory for Team HonDoc.  With the win, HonDoc moves into 4th place, while Nationwide slid to 5th place.

The Lanny's vs. LumbarJack's game was a real pressure cooker from start to finish.  LumbarJack's took the early lead on a Joe Timberlake goal, assisted by Lisa Thornton, but Jon Wybo tied the game on a goal assisted by George Prince.  Jason Kniesc dropped a bomb of a shot from the right faceoff circle, but Mark Rizzo somehow came up with the save to keep the score even.  Jason would not be denied later, though, and gave Lanny's the 2-1 lead.  In the second half, Matt Schmidt tallied his 8th of the year, assisted by Jon Wybo, to give Lanny's a two goal lead.  Nathan Thornton and the LumbarJacks didn't fall down with out a fight, as Nathan scored his first of the night, 4th of the season, to cut the lead back to one.  The 'Jacks couldn't find the equalizer though, and fall to 6th place in the standings, while the win jumped Lanny's to the 3rd spot.

In an Ice showdown, the Ice Pirates faced off against Extreme Ice with the goal of handing Extreme their first Loss of the season.  Rookie goaltender Myles Rahalewicz was up to the task and allowed only one goal against the high scoring Extreme Ice squad.  Nick Beiring assisted on Brett Mathew's goal to give the Pirates the initial lead, but Brian Q (his 16th of the season) tallied for the house squad and evened the game.  After an offensive rush from seasoned defenseman Geoff Person, Nick Beiring showed some fancy stick work, worked his way through two defensemen, and tallied the game winner!  The Pirates' win secures them a bye in the first round as the second place team for the season.  The loss meant nothing to Extreme Ice in the standings, as they've had 1st place wrapped up for about 3 weeks :)

The games coming up this week will have a big impact on the final standings for the season.  The Pirates/Lanny's matchup will have two teams looking to continue their winning streaks, as Lanny's looks for their 3rd in a row, and the Pirates will be fighting for their 4th in a row.  With a win, Lanny's will lock down 3rd place.  If they lose, their seed will be determined by the results of the other two games.  The second game will determine who will earn the 6th seed, as Nationwide and LumbarJacks both have 6 points.  Nationwide has more wins, so has the tie-breaker advantage, so to leave 6th place, LumbarJacks must win.  If HonDoc wins the third game of the night, they could jump to 3rd (with a Lanny's loss) or fall to 5th.

If HonDoc loses, and Nationwide and LumbarJacks tie, we'll have 3 teams tied with 7 points.  In case you were wondering....HonDoc would be the 4th seed based on Goal differential in a head to head comparison against Nationwide (both would have the same exact record), Nationwide would hold the 5th place, and LumbarJacks would finish in 6th.

Any other tie scenarios I can think of look like the head-to-head matchup will determine the playoff seeding.

I can't believe we are already at the end of the season.  Amazing how quickly 10 weeks fly by.  I don't think we've ever seen so many tie games in a season, and with a little effort, I should be able to confirm that after the end of the games this weekend.

I do not think I have done enough of late to thank the companies that do so much for our league.  HonDoc, Nationwide, Dr. Pai's and the Extreme Ice Center all contribute to ensure that our league continues to be affordable for everyone.  (With that being said, we need a LOT of effort in the next few weeks to obtain additional sponsors!!)

A tremendous thank you to Mike Hall of HonDoc, Mike Bare of Nationwide, Dr. Neil Pai of Pai Chiropractic, and Moe, Mike, Meredith and Tom at Extreme Ice for hosting and supporting our league.

Remember that the first round of the playoffs occurs on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.  We will use whatever remaining time is after the second game for pickup broomball if anyone would like to stick around, introduce the sport to anyone new, or get some extra ice time!

9/16/2009

The Fall 2009 Season began in typical Carolina Broomball Fashion.

Typical that the rosters were announced JUST before the season started.
Typical that the first game of the season was a rematch of last season's Championship Game.
Typical that the competition is excellent.
Typical that something was just not typical.

And so the rematch:  LumbarJacks won the matchup in May.  Extreme Ice wanted to erase the memory of the double-overtime loss.  And it proved to be everything you could have expected.  A grueling, down to the wire grudge match between to powerhouse teams, with a 1-0 victory for Extreme Ice Center.  Brain Quedenfeld scored the only tally of the game for the game winner!

A slightly modified Lanny's team would meet a slightly modified Nationwide team.  Both teams start this season without key veteran players, and look to gel quickly with their new look rosters.  Doug Boik and George Beaver started the scoring for Nationwide as Doug tallied his first of the season.  Matt Schmidt scores his first Carolina Broomball goal to even it up at 1-1.  Congratulations Matt!  Dave Metzl returns the favor and tallies his first Carolina Broomball goal (way to make your presence felt early on the new team Dave!), assisted by Stephan Angers.  Jason Kneisc would get some help from Todd Neely to tie the game again.  George Beaver added his name to the "Goals" column and tallied his second point of the game, while Dave Metzl provided the assist.  Matt Schmidt showed he can help, too, and assisted Jon Wybo for the sixth and final goal of the game.  Another great matchup that was anybody's game!

Then the third game of the night started.  Typical Mike Hall.  Brett Mathew and Nick Beiring threw the kitchen sink, a washing machine, and many small appliances at Mike Hall and he stopped everything.  Nick was able to sneak one onto the top shelf to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.  And then, to make Charlotte Broomball History, Mike Hall crushes the ball to clear the zone, and the ball arcs towards the goal.  Fill-in goalie, Mondo Normile, gets a read on the curving, spinning ball, and casually lays his stick across the ice to gain control of the ball.  The ball spins and pops over his stick and enter the goal.  For the first time in Charlotte broomball history, a goalie scores on a defended goal.  Congratulations Mike Hall.  Go sell your blocker Mondo!!  Pushing harder than ever, HonDoc controls the ball, and from a pass from Zan Henry, Carter Jensen shoot, deflects the ball off a defender, and beats Mondo for the second time that night.  And so the half would end and the game would remain 2-1 until the Pirates time out at 4:11 to go in the contest.  The Pirates pull the (worthless) goalie, and send Mondo to the front line.  A pass to Brett, a pass back to Mondo, a quick shot, an open five hole, and we have a tie game!  A minute later, Mondo shoots again, and finds another open five hole!  A minute later, a Penalty Shot is awarded to the Pirates, and believe it or not, Mondo Normile finds the 5-hole for the 3rd time in 3 minutes, and gives his team a 4-2 lead with 1:06 left in the game.  Brett Mathew, who had been quietly helping all night long, tallies his 3rd assist with a perfect pass to Angie Synan who connected with a big shot to score her first two points of the season!  And so, in very non-typical way, the Ice Pirates defeat HonDoc by a score of 6-2!!

Attached is the schedule for the rest of the season.  I cut and pasted it here, and have also attached it as an Excel file.  Kenny will post on the website ( www.carolinabroomball.com ) soon.

Please send me an e-mail if you have any questions.

Please note we do not play on Sunday, September 27th.
